Yet another Halloween staple that I haven’t really seen! I’m sure that I’ve tried watching it at home before and fallen asleep….and I can see why. I found myself admiring the stop-motion animation and designs much more than really investing deeply in the story of the film or the characters, which were all pretty simple, and it’s where most of my enjoyment of the film came from. I’ve always loved Oogie Boogie’s design and overall there’s such a distinct and memorable look to everything. It was more of a musical than I thought it was going to be which was welcome, but most of the songs didn’t stick out besides “This Is Halloween” and “What’s This?”. There’s really nothing inherently wrong with this film for what it is, I’m just not super partial to spooky stuff. I’m glad I finally checked it out even if I didn’t love it and find it a bit overhyped compared to its cult following. Viewed through the lens of it being a short little holiday diversion more akin to a storybook than a large-scale film, it’s cute!
