The longer I sit with Anora, the less I like it. It ages similarly to POOR THINGS: the immersive and incredible visuals, accompanied by the phenomenal cast and rollercoaster plot-lines, are a spectacle at first, but I actually saw this around two weeks ago and it’s sitting worse and worse with me each time I think about it. There’s undeniably a lot to appreciate. Mikey Madison is absolutely sublime. Every woman in this film looks stunning. The beginning and ending are so enthralling. Anora transported me into its world and I was absolutely hooked throughout, right until that gut-wrenching finale. But then, the middle act becomes so bogged-down with men shouting, a winding quest to find Vanya, and Ani being constantly ignored, that it became a thing of infuriation. Equally as frustrating is how Ani feels weirdly underdeveloped, for the titular role. Her naivety and delusion in the situation is understandable, but Baker crafts her as wanting nothing more than to be Vanya’s wife, which is a damn shame. Does she have goals, hobbies, or a life away from her job? Who knows. In order to truly solidify where I stand, Anora undoubtedly needs a rewatch — thematically, I’m not sold, but visually, I’m in hook, line and sinker. Gutted to say Anora isn’t up there as one of the best of the year for me, considering I was so excited for it.
