La La Land

La La Land

Movies can be so special. I remember watching this for the first time in theaters. It was February 2017 on Valentines Day. The movie had gotten a lot of Oscar buzz by then, and they were doing some promo to get people to watch it.

My brother, mom, Dad and I went to go watch it, which was special because we weren't doing too well financially back then. So being able to see a movie with all of us was really nice.

I remember my parents being absolutely mesmerized by the movie in a way I've never seen before. Especially my Dad. For me though, I didn't quite have the same connection with it. I thought it was good, but was very surprised that I didn't connect on it with the level they did. Oh well, I was 15 at the time.

Rewatching this movie made me a little sad. Remembering how happy he was. Remembering how he'd play the soundtrack all the time and get lost in it. Recounting all the places in LA that he went too there and how much he loved the music.

Tonight, as I'm older now, it's like... I can feel that a lot more. I see it. I see what he personally saw. As Ive matured in life and gone through those places with relationships, following your dreams, not following your dreams and doing something more practical, and how things in life just don't go how you plan it.

*spoiler* I especially loved that ending sequence where Sebastian is playing the song and both him and Mia flash though an alternative timeline of what their lives could've looked like if their both their relationship and careers worked out. It's so tempting to do that, but at the of the day, it's not realistic.

The movie made me get lost in it's world and instill in me some hope about life. To try harder chasing my dreams and not ponder about a life that could've been.

There's also something so old school about this movie, giving it that extra charm. You'd think after how successful this was, more studios would be aching to make stuff like this but they're not. One negative side effect is seeing film bros to try and make things like this tho, but that's just me hating lmao.

All in all, wow. What a profoundly different watch experience now 8 years later. Really just hits so much harder as I get older and I like that it made me feel a little closer to my Dad.
