While the opening sequence of the film, a traffic musical number, didn’t grab me all that much, the film grew on me considerably. There's great chemistry between Stone and Gosling and the way the movie was edited and shot made it really enjoyable. There weren't really any dull moments and I enjoyed the themes present throughout. I was also a fan of the quite a-typical ending and how it wrapped itself in a little bow, as well as how plot points from the beginning come full circle. If I had to pick a genre of film that attracts me the least, it would be musicals but this one, to me, seemed a lot more than just 'a musical': the story at its core is engaging, warm and heartfelt. It's a very authentic take on a love story and the characters are feel incredibly rich and layered. Unlike many of the larger-than-life love stories which just make you feel disconnected because they're so unrealistic, La La Land will do the opposite.
