Epicz’s review published on Letterboxd:
If you think Stuart Little being picked over some kid orphan is bad, the Peltzer dog getting jealous of their love for a little furball that I could punt across an American football field is a lot worse.
Hey Cinephiles, Merry Christmas Eve. 1 MORE NIGHT!!! Today for the 24th Film Review of Christmas we have watched Gremlins (1984).
Gremlins is a fantastic example of a movie filled with pure 80’s vibes. The two tonal story works well with Joe Dante’s directing, first half of the film giving us this wholesomeness of Christmas and the unknown fantasy background of Gizmo and his origin then kicking us down into full throttle delivering on a high intense action/horror film with extreme violence and gore
For a character that has their dog constantly at their side, even at their workplace when his dog shouldn’t be allowed, I find it hard to believe Billy would keep Gizmo in such an environment that would threaten some of the rules he was given. On the other hand, Billy’s determination to bring his dog to work and break his workplace’s rules is a foreshadow into breaking the rules for Gizmo. A great conflicting personality within a film you wouldn’t expect such complexity for any of its characters, a testament to how Gremlins is a 80’s films that stands above many others.
I don’t think I could review this film without talking about the killer music score, with a gentle ethereal aura for Gizmo with a complete blast of contrast with the Gremlin theme with the synth perfectly personifying The Gremlins themselves.
HOLY SHIT PHOEBE CATES’S BACKSTORY ABOUT WHY SHE DISLIKES CHRISTMAS, JESUS CHRIST NO WONDER PG13 WAS INVENTED AFTER THIS
As a Christmas film it is one kids movie you definitely wouldn’t show to the family, but it is as hardcore as I remember and still holds a place in one of my most favourite 80s movies.
