The Revenant is an utterly exhausting movie going experience...and I mean that in a good way. I suspect the grueling and meditative nature of this movie will bore and/or isolate the vast majority of the mainstream moviegoers, for those in the right mood...this is a near masterpiece of soulful meditation on life, revenge, and nature.
A few random thoughts:
-About halfway through the movie, I realized that I'd been clenching my fist for about an hour straight...it had that effect on me.
-This is the most beautiful movie of the year, by far. Pause the movie at any time and frame that picture, amazing.
-That bear attack scene...DAMN that was brutal!
-Leo is of course great and deserves the Oscar this year, but truth be told I think his performance in Wolf of Wall street had more 'oomph' to it. His performance here is obviously grueling, but he is reduced to mumbles almost the whole time.
-Even though I could only understand Tom Hardy about 40% of the time, he steals the show and really puts in a marvelous performance as one of the better villains of recent memory.
...I think if you are the type of person that likes Inarritu, you probably know what kind of movie you are getting into here, and you'll probably love it. If you are going into this expecting to be entertained though, get ready to suffer through 3 hours of hell...because this folks is NOT a popcorn movie. This is a uncompromising vision that will 'click' with you or not. I don't think it's a perfect movie by any means, but surely it 'clicked' with me and I've not been able to get it out of my head since seeing it last night.
