This was pretty good, even if a bit overstuffed – wonderful costumes, stunning production design, well-directed and dynamic musical numbers, etc.
Cynthia and Ariana are the main drawing points, though – both have pretty stellar, smart performances. You can see they both understand these characters perfectly; Ariana leans hard on everything that makes Glinda FUN, while Cynthia explores Elphaba's layers (the hard façade, the intelligence, the weariness, the vulnerability) so, so well.
I was only marginally familiar with the theater version, and while it is not normally the sort of musical I gravitate towards (it's a tad too obvious if we're being honest), this definitely feels like an above-average adaptation and a good entry point for newcomers like me.
