In Jackpot!, a future, semi-dystopian Los Angeles has introduced a lottery wherein the winner can be legally killed for their newly gained riches. But if the winner can stay alive until sundown, the money is all theirs.
Awkwafina plays the lottery winner. John Cena plays the muscle hired to protect her for a percentage of the winnings. I'm a fan of these two performers and they have a very nice onscreen chemistry together. Simu Liu is in the mix as the big bad.
The concept of the movie is handled well. There's murderous mobs wielding knives and axes and all sorts of implements of mayhem. There's lots of well-choreographed fights and brawls and tons of fancy stunt driving.
Jackpot! is not unlike other "legalized mayhem" movies such as The Purge, but is played more for laughs. It's directed by Paul Feig, so comedy is to be expected.
Jackpot! didn't knock my socks off, they remain firmly on my feet, but I was entertained. Cena and Awkwafina are the big draws for me, but the entire movie is an enjoyable diversion.
