Emilia Pérez is a complicated picture that unsurprisingly warrants its polarised reception. It’s a messy clusterfuck that aims to tell its narratively indecisive story through the means of an abstract musical, and a vision like that is bound to spark controversy. In that regard this film is actually interestingly similar to Folie à Deux from earlier this year. But taking big swings doesn’t inherently justify messiness.
The sporadic musical numbers were incredibly varied in quality—I was aggressively bobbing my head at some, and for others I was bored to no end. However, Zoe Saldaña was an absolute force of entertainment in this film. Her enthusiastic commitment to the musical scenes were consistently fun to watch (even if some of the songs were lyrically and melodically questionable).
