I have an image in my head of Chazelle, Stone, and Gosling piling into a Uhaul and making their way around LA with a load of street lamps to set up every scene. It’s a fun image, even if it’s just that.

That ending really puts into focus Chazelle’s skill with implication. We see Mia ordering two coffees, is one for Sebastian? We see a child, is Sebastian the father? Then we get the whole dream sequence where you’re wondering the whole time which is the reality and which is the dream? Was the whole movie a dream? Is anything reality? This could be disorienting to the point of losing the thread, but somehow they land the plane.
And part of what’s so effective about it is Chazelle knows where he’s leading you with every shot, and he knows when to pay off your expectation and when to subvert it. It’s the kind of thing that can’t be taught, just really impressive stuff.
