Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch

First and foremost, this film isn't perfect. For one, the opening 10 minutes, while entertaining enough and vital to the plot, are exposition heavy and have an extremely different tone compared to the rest of the film. They're not a BAD 10 minutes, they just kinda sell the movie short, and I think it might've been more effective to have a bit of Lilo exposition first instead of the outer space setting, just to give first time viewers a better idea of what's ahead.

Okay, my one nitpick is over.

I'm happy to say that despite the few flaws that this film has...who freaking cares? Lilo and Stitch is a symphony of all that is good in the world. This film is IMPORTANT too. Kids don't often get to see characters who aren't the bully or the bad guy misbehave in anyway. Both of this film's titular characters embody the ugly side of bottled up emotions - Lilo and Stitch are loud, mischievous, and don't play well with others. The way the film introduces us to these two, however, is vital in one sense: likability. Both Lilo and Stitch are some of the most likable animated characters of all time and it is rooted in the heartache that leads to their outbursts of uncomfortable emotion. By having Stitch's struggle represent Lilo's, the film is able to present its messages of found family and healthy management of emotions in a less on the nose and, of course, more entertaining way. Its literal genius.

Add on to that the surprisingly perfect mixture of sci-fi and Hawaiin elements, the phenomenal score, and of course the breathtaking animation, and you have one of the greatest animated films of all time.

This film means the world to me and I'm so sad it didn't make its way into my life sooner than the fifth grade, but when it did, it came to me at a time where I felt like an emotional mess. I'm not saying this film saved me or anything...but the themes of this film definitely resonated with me in more ways than I even realized at the time.

And heck, we all needed reminded of it every once and a while, and I don't know a better way. This film just makes me so so so very happy.
