god this fucking WRECKED me. i screamed “oh my god” when it ended because…i felt everything. i felt all the love, all the tragedy of this gorgeous GORGEOUS film. it has been a really long time since a love story made me feel like this. i blushed alongside with the characters, i laughed at their flirting, i yearned as they did.
what i thinks makes the film so special, besides its pretty phenomenal craft + beautiful screenplay + BRILLIANT performances, is its scope. this is not just a love story. it’s a meditation on one’s relationship with their hometown. it’s about the fleeting yet infinite nature of childhood friendships. it explores the wounds we accumulate when we’re young and how they continue to manifest as we grow. it’s about how someone so cruel to us in our youth can rewrite history to view themselves as a hero. it’s about family. it’s about race.
and at its core, it’s a gentle ode to first love - the kind of connection that burrows itself deep within one’s soul. a kind of love that is both life-giving and heartbreaking. i was endlessly moved by this film. watching it holding hands with the love of my life, i felt so grateful to exist in a world with such capacity for love.
