It would be an understatement for me to say that I wasn’t overly eager to watch THE APPRENTICE. A film about one of my least favourite men in the world. I am going to try to be fair to the filmmaking and all the talent that went into making this film instead of the man himself (it would be an auto ½ star for Trump because 0’s aren’t available on here).
The performances from Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are really good and the highlight for me. The film is at its best when they’re onscreen together with their energy bouncing off each other. Stan clearly nailed some of the Trump-esque body language, facial movements and dialogue that we all, unfortunately, know too well.
Director Ali Abbasi has captured the look, feel and essence of the time period this was set in. NYC truly looks grungy at times. And the opulent excess of the uber-rich is also well done. Keeping the story focused on the aspect of the student becomes the teacher was a great choice because really, do we want to know even more about Trump’s life? This was more about Roy Cohn’s creation of “Frankenstein”.
