happy early valentine’s day to myself: this is probably my sixth rewatch?? i don’t even know
and as usual i loved it and i don’t think i’ll ever get this movie off my head
anyways, i wrote a movie review for my school and decided to put it here:
”La La Land” is a movie that I’ve recently stumbled across that has completely changed the way I see both the beauty of cinema and life.
The movie follows Mia, an aspiring actress, who serves latte to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian, a jazz musician who scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars. Both Mia and Sebastian have their respective dreams. For Mia, to be a movie star and as for Sebastian, to own a jazz club. But as success mounts, they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair and the dream they have been yearning to achieve.
I’d like to think of this movie as a love letter to dreamers. To people, like me, who has a dream that seems so hard to achieve yet still holding on to get closer in order to reach the stars. Looking at Mia and Sebastian’s story gives me a type of closure that I never knew I needed. It somehow felt like a warm hug from a friend or an understanding of passion.
Another reason why I am completely in awe with the movie is because it’s a musical. Music could express a million expressions, it could be therapeutic, delightful or even depressing. As we follow the footsteps and the journey Mia and Sebastian walk through, there are music montages played along the choreography of the characters. The colours in the movie are exceptionally gorgeous and each frame of the shot is simply stunning and jaw-dropping. I find myself cheered up in between the musical shots with beautiful colours yet feeling like my heart shattered at the same time.
I also find Mia and Sebastian’s relationship extremely realistic and I think it’s the reason why I’m in love with it. They have a relationship built up with passion and intellectuality. The understanding of passion between one another, even though their interests are completely different, makes me wonder if I could eventually find something as beatiful as that too.
In conclusion, “La La Land” by Damien Chazelle is a cinematic gem that should be treasured. I would highly recommend it to my friends and in fact everyone around me. I think people who are dreamers will find a piece of themselves in this movie too.
