so, my wife let me pick the movie tonight (we don’t watch horror together very often) and we somehow landed on this one. they haven’t seen the first two and have definitely also been calling this Annabelle’s Slumber Party since its release. and you know what? we both thought it was solid!
I am always on board for a movie set mainly over the course of one night, there’s just something cozy about that to me, and I was glad we got that here. our three main girls were likable and believable, and it was kind of nice to see them all outsmarting evil and saving each other without outside help. having this set at the Warren house also opened it up for all of the museum pieces to come out and get a little wild, which kept things interesting. this one also ups the atmosphere game yet another notch, and I really appreciate that.
it still feels very much part of its universe, but there’s an added layer of self-awareness and humor that’s refreshing here. sure, there is a lot that’s familiar, but you know what? they know it, and it’s fun. I feel like they got that recipe down pat in this, and it’s bound to be a good time as long as it’s what you ordered.
