A real riot once it gets to its livelier second half. This has some of the hardest laughs I’ve had in a cinema in a long while, especially one of the best PG-13 F bombs of recent times. The first half is a bit flat and lacking in excitement but once it takes off there’s a solid 45 minutes of non-stop fun and silliness and Michael Keaton doing his thang. It’s probably on par with the first for me although I don’t hold that film as dearly as some.
Despite it being the aim, it doesn’t quite feel as handmade as the original but I think that’s bound to happen when you’re shooting on digital cameras and the film is set in the modern day. It’s still got lots of cool sets and silly prosthetics and goofy CGI and animations that lean into looking stupid. Catherine O’Hara has some killer retorts here, Winona Ryder is always fun, Monica Bellucci is underused and Jenna Ortega is a bit held back, but damn that is a crazy hot cast. The way they write out/ get around Jeffrey Jones’ character is so elaborate and so funny. Thank goodness this was 105 minutes too, bring back shorter runtimes for the blockbusters that don’t need to be 2 hours.
There’s some wild moments and swings in this that are all done with such silly intentions that this really feels like Tim Burton’s best in a while. It’s messy and all over the place but it’s definitively him, and once it gets going you can feel him really having fun making a movie again.
