Such a shame with my memory of this one, as ultimately I ended up thinking... So What? It combines so many of My Favourite Things: musical numbers, all Sweet and Lovely, and the Melancholy Mood of A Fine Romance left wondering. Perhaps I'm Old-Fashioned but - with both of these - Umbrellas of Cherbourg was Miles Ahead, its sincerity Unforgettable, while Chazelle's posturing can't make this one fly. And it just didn't connect emotionally, where a musical's transcendence really should. Individual scenes, like the meet-cute on a hillside with their Moonlight Serenade or Seb's inevitable tragicomic sell-out show, work well; but My Heart Stood Still by the coda even as the Secret Love was crying out for tears from me. All I've got are some magical Memories of You for consolation from my first viewing, and They Can't Take That Away From Me - thanks for Tak[ing] Five to read.
So yeah, Seb: maybe not like you, but I do like jazz.
