I cannot wait to show my future kids this movie.
It's a different kind of versatility in a modern-day film that is very scarce. It speaks a lot to themes in Asian culture embedded within ancestry, generational trauma, and tension between two worlds (old and new).
Miyazaki has done it again, again, and again. With an excellent soundtrack by Hisaishi, the film gets extra points for nostalgia and for reminding me personally about my relationship with growing up first-generation Asian-American. I see a lot of my family in this movie that I have never seen so well portrayed. There are themes of letting go, fathers who have the best intentions with the wrong ways of doing them, and Asian parents who just want what's best for their kids.
I could watch this movie again, three times over, and still find new parts of myself in this movie over and over again.
