You walk into The Zone of Interest with an understanding of the horror that exists in the not so distant sounds. There’s no way to depict what we know to be true on screen, and so, it’s not shown to us. For the same reason, the film is stripped down and the elements that you normally find in a piece of entertainment are not found. And of course, in the final minutes of the film, Glazer leaves you speechless. Staring directly into the past, and understanding that the films between then and now have used the medium not just to depict the horror, but for many other reasons, yet we know the truth. We know the horror.
