The experiences of the perilously intrepid artist struggling to reconcile their dreams and ambitions with self-doubt, other people and reality at large seems to be to Damien Chazelle what the Italian-American experience has been for Martin Scorsese; the fundamental inspirational cornerstone of a preternaturally talented filmmaker. No doubt Chazelle will branch out from here (and let's face it, the sky is the limit for him at this point) but it's hard to imagine he will be thought of first and foremost as anything other than the music man of his cinematic generation. 'La La Land' is not for everyone, but if you're a dreamer, an artist, a romantic, a cinephile or simply in the mood for some music, you'll enjoy every minute.
