You can take Burton’s hot girlfriend out of the story, and it honestly wouldn’t alter the film in any major way. Willem Dafoe was just here to collect a paycheck, sadly. Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega hard carried. For two movies to be named about the titular character, he sure as hell feels like a side character in both of them. At least in the first movie, the story focused on a ghost couple and Ryder, so his contributions felt impactful. Here, the story is a merger of half-baked subplots, especially about Burton’s hot girlfriend and Arthur Conti’s character, and Beetlejuice resolves those two conflicts pretty quickly, especially the latter in an extremely goofy way. Overall, this was forgettable.
