Two strangers haul four suitcases full of black market pork across occupied Paris in 1942 by foot—and hijinks ensue. Not quite gut-busting hijinks, really, but amusing, odd couple stuff, like run-ins with police and attracting stray dogs and lots of bickering—and getting caught by Nazis too. The movie walks a fine line between comedy and commentary, though it never really seems too clear on what the theme of its commentary is. This is perhaps a result of its emphasis on setting up Jean Gabin’s character in a morally superior role—which by this part of his career seemed mandatory—and never quite fully justifying it. All that aside, it still manages to figure out a final scene that’s probably one of the best resolutions in film history for two characters for whom a cliché-free rapprochement seemed impossible.
