Steadfastly minimal yet also ardently humanist story of small time criminals in a Parisian banlieue who get in over their heads. The narrative is stark, and simple, with little to no exposition in the dialogue, and barebones audio—there’s no score to speak of. If you eat up this kind of raw filmmaking, and I do, then this is your jam. At the same time, director Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche takes his time to linger on quiet moments: an aria at a funeral, a jockey on a racehorse rounding the track, and more—these add a real poetry to the violent proceedings. Superb.
Saw it at Film at Lincoln Center’s “Rendez Vous with French Cinema” festival. It was pouring rain out but I made it all the way there from Brooklyn and no one can take that away from me.
