A glossy but soberly made melodrama that, despite two game leads, neither goes anywhere surprising nor unearths anything particularly revealing about greed, ambition or the eighties. The central lure of movies like these is to deep dive into the tangled cross-purposes of misaligned romantic partners, and while director Sean Durkin delivers the outlines of that, he never fleshes out the particulars with anything unexpected. Things pretty much go exactly the way you expect them to go, all the way up to an ending that seems less like a capstone to the previous two hours than a deflation of intent.
