It’s not just that this movie is told so well or that its key set pieces, like the pivotal bridge crossing that’s featured in the poster, are all so impressive. It’s just that there are so many elements here that are all executed with tremendous confidence and skill, both technically and artistically. The prologue for example, which could have been just a pro forma act to set up the main characters’ stories, is in itself a phenomenal example of directorial judgment where Friedkin deftly constructs motivations for his four leads with unerring precision. He resists not just overly chatty dialogue but even uniformity in screentime—we get what we need and in exactly the time needed for each of our protagonists. No more, no less. He’s in full command of his craft with this movie and he knows exactly how much or how little to tell us about each character, each situation, each point of contention or each plot point. It’s stunning to watch.
