This hand-drawn adaptation of a graphic novel is a rare expression of genuine belief in the value and difficulty of platonic friendship, and an ode to the lost New York City of the pre-9/11 years too. I was delighted to be sitting in the theater for something of this caliber: lovingly made, extremely gentle, and yet still emotionally honest. I went with the whole family and also with another family, and none of the kids are even little little anymore, and yet every one of us thought it was delightful. Like an ass though, I wish it had been 20 minutes shorter, but of course I can’t turn off that part of my brain no matter how hard I try.
