All I really remembered from my first viewing of this “Alien” expansion pack was that it rather incompetently tried to build out a mythology around the iconic xenomorph. And that its characters were really dumb. Revisiting it now both of those takeaways hold true; the lore that director Ridley Scott attempts to build is less mysterious than it is just patchy and unsatisfying. And the characters that we ride along with into the heart of this supposedly awe-inspiring back story are just roundly, universally stupid. But what I had forgotten was that the movie itself looks great. The technology, the sets, the creature design are all executed at such a truly elite level that they almost fool you into thinking that this is a good movie. It’s not a good movie though. It’s just yet another example of how Hollywood has mistaken Ridley Scott’s production design talents, his razor sharp aesthetic sensibility, for actual directorial talent. It’s a misconception that continually lets down the productions he mounts.
