I haven’t watched this in at least a decade but revisiting it now, it’s clear as ever that it’s a minor masterpiece. It’s so assured, so well structured, and it’s beaming with the white hot glow of its two leads. It’s true that Clooney here hasn’t quite yet figured out how to get beyond his shallow TV persona but he’s obviously starting to understand that the Clooney that audiences like best is the version that’s devastatingly handsome but also kind of a f—up. Lopez is radiant but also surprisingly confident and unexpectedly naturalistic. This is a genuinely great acting performance from her and you could easily imagine she might have had an entirely different career had she not leaned so hard into celebrity. The two are dynamite together. Everything about the culmination of their “will they or won’t they” flirting is intoxicatingly beguiling. It’s a shame that this is their only pairing. It should have been the start of a whole series of Hepburn and Tracy-style matchups. The supporting bench is incredibly deep as well: Ving Rhames, Luis Guzman, Don Cheadle, Catherine Keener, Steve Zahn, Isaiah Washington, Albert Brooks, Dennis Farina, Michael Keaton, Nancy Allen, Viola Davis—fully, completely stacked. But the MVP, for me, is Soderbergh, who directs with such style and fleet footedness, bringing virtually every corner of this story alive with razor sharp wit and romantic energy.
