Joseph Losey demonstrates his particular talent for rendering creeping insanity in this Vichy-era story of a case of mistaken identity. There’s a palpable frigidity that closes around Alain Delon’s titular protagonist as he runs gradually further and further afoul of the antisemitic laws clamping down on Paris, even as he insists over and over again, “This has nothing to do with me!” Losey makes a brilliant choice to leave many plot details (maybe just about all of them?) unexplained and unresolved, a terrifying way of underscoring the inherent lack of logic that drives the persecution at the heart of this story. The result is a disturbingly effective reminder of how fascism has no sympathies, and also a really, really depressing movie to watch ahead of this year's presidential election.
