Beautiful and beguiling, but even as I watched it, I knew I’d need to watch it again to grasp what was on the screen. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that it took me a while to catch on to its formal structure: there’s a present-day story that leads to the culmination of Mishima’s journey, there’s flashbacks to Mishima’s youth, and then there’s the dramatizations of some of his writings. It’s a lot, but it’s all gorgeous, aesthetically defying time even forty years later, and executed with the extreme sense of self-discipline that director Paul Schrader is known for. Even without being able to fully appreciate the intricacies of this masterfully singular biopic, it’s easy to see that this is what it means to really challenge the audience.
