For a movie that purports to show us a rare truth in the form of a same sex love story/noir thriller, everything about this feels fake. That includes the faux 80s milieu, the ersatz “Blood Simple” vibe, Ed Harris’s and Dave Franco’s ridiculous wigs, the magical realist twist that just made me roll my eyes, and most of all Kristen Stewart’s manneristic, post-aughts Instagram-style performance. The only thing that registers is Katy O’Brian’s screen presence, but even that is obscured by a second half that seems confused by what to do with her character.
