Brutal, raw, frequently dreamlike banlieu tale set the morning after a ghetto riot on the outskirts of Paris. Clearly indebted to Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” but also fully its own expression, thanks to director Mathieu Kassovitz’s abundance of cinematic invention. It’s a testament both to that filmmaking prowess and also an indictment of society that this film, again like Lee’s, still feels completely fresh and urgent, three decades later.
