A narcissistic, middle-aged jerk and his hot girlfriend pick up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a narcissistic, youthful jerk, and inexplicably invite him to spend the day sailing with them—without even asking his name. In fact, there’s a lot of inexplicable behavior here, and not just of the toxic masculine variety; there’s just a lot of people doing things that seem to defy normal human logic—not just narrative logic but emotional logic, the way people would just act in a real situation—mostly along the lines of continually clashing with each other but not really even fully living out those clashes before forgetting almost entirely. It feels typical of a lot of late 20th century intellectual drama where the filmmakers were more interested in propping up conflict than making it feel authentic or believable; I always think of the often farcically illogical behavior of the characters in Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” as a prime example. That said, the direction of this movie is pretty impressive, particularly the way the camera nimbly flows in and out of what looks like genuine sailing practice on the part of the actors. Overall it feels well made but kind of dumb too.
