It’s not like I had any tremendous affection for this when I first saw it in my youth, but I did at least find it to be a pretty impressive narrative exercise that compellingly reflected the discursive character of Gen X party kids. Looking back on it now, I find it to be actually pretty hollow; not all that interesting as a structurally novel hangout movie, and not all that inspired as a portrait of disaffected twenty-somethings either. What it is is derivative, as in its debts to “Pulp Fiction” are considerable, to say the least. I’m not sure if I missed that aspect of it the first time or maybe I was just too forgiving of anyone spreading the gospel of nonlinear, vaguely countercultural, sardonic action at the time. This just feels like an Urban Outfitters take on Tarantino-esque storytelling, and it underscores for me how difficult it is to nail down director Doug Liman’s signature voice. What is it that ties this, “The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Edge of Tomorrow” together? I’m not sure I can say, other than perhaps he’s just the luckiest hack of the past few decades?
