For good or ill, it's impossible to consider this film entirely on its own merits but I’d argue that it’s also impossible to deny that this is a tremendous piece of filmmaking. There were many times when I just shook my head, just in awe of the spectacle that Miller puts up on the screen—the virtuosity of the action is equally as pristine as it was in “Fury Road,” but his ability to communicate the narrative through nearly wordless on-screen activity and the eyes of his actors, is maybe even more impressive than in that earlier film. This is not however as perfect an expression as “Fury Road.” In some ways it actually has greater ambitions—it really is a “saga,” even if Mad Max has nothing to do with it—but occasionally, it falls short of its reach. Still, it’s a stunning piece of work.
