I’m only slightly embarrassed to admit that this was my sixth viewing. Yes, I’m a total nerd for what Villeneuve is doing with Arrakis. It’s not just that the filmmaking on offer here is so grand in scale, but it’s also kind of amazing that this just keeps getting better with each revisit. More than the first few outings, I’m bowled over by how uniformly excellent the performances are; there’s not a weak link in the entire ensemble. This is a function of superb casting of course, but it’s also true that the cast is working with a crackerjack script and benefitting from extremely elegant editing; the subtleties in the relationships between the characters come into clearer and clearer focus with each repeat viewing. Despite the sci-fi opera backdrop, what Villeneuve is doing so right here is maintaining a Coppola-like focus on the journey of a single family, and all of the emotional complexity involved therein. The fact that he can make that backbone shine amidst all of the lore and effects and planet-scale drama is frankly amazing. It’s a stunning piece of work; I’ll be eager to see how my perception of it might change after the sequel—this weekend!
