Schlocky and slack in all the ways that its predecessor was brainy and taut, this is a movie that thinks acknowledging its own absurd, craven existence earns it some kind of pass on being a patently absurd, craven cash grab. Director Renny Harlin, despite a modest adroitness with explosions, has a workmanlike directorial touch that does nothing to elevate a truly pedestrian script full of lazy callbacks and cheap pandering. None of the players distinguish themselves particularly well here, though William Atherton manages to turn in a surprisingly nimble performance in a reprisal of his love-to-hate-him role from the first movie. None of this rehash is essential, but of all the recycled parts, Atherton’s is the only one that would have been worth seeing more of.
