Fourth time viewing I found myself thinking about all of the stories that intersect with this “brief encounter”: all the little dramadies around each of the station staff and whether Alec is maybe some kind of womanizer who does this every so often. And, since we experience the story almost exclusively from Laura’s perspective, whether it’s even accurate or not, or maybe some kind of delusion? Thinking of the station as a microcosm of these intersecting lives is a fascinating, off-kilter way to look at this narrative, and the kind of tertiary reading that’s only possible with a movie as richly detailed and carefully executed as this one.
I showed it to the rest of the family, who all watched it for the first time. My wife and 14-year old daughter liked it. My twin 11-year old boys repeatedly complained, "This movie is SOOO boring!" multiple times throughout, but admitted at the end it was kind of good after all.
