Is it okay to throw shade at Saul Bass? Because the poster he designed for this movie is a primitive, Matisse-like drawing of a woman’s face…with a little tear coming out of one eye. Awww!
This movie is as idiotic as the poster design. Jean Seberg—and her truly horrid voiceover—is the main problem here. She’s no less vacuous than she would be in “Breathless” a few years later, but director Otto Preminger doesn’t do any of the favors for her that Godard would, where he juxtaposed Seberg’s detached dissonance against an interrogation of filmic conventions. Instead “Bonjour Tristesse” is little more than a melodrama or a morality tale, with little on its mind except making the audience feel superior to its lead characters. The only one who makes the whole thing work for him is David Niven who is indefatigably jolly throughout. He’s in a much funnier film than the one Preminger delivered.
