There’s a genuine attempt here to make this more than just a super-hero movie with a Latinx star, but rather a truly Latinx movie about a Latinx super-hero. It’s a case where it’s not clear whether the energy invested in trying to make this otherwise antiseptic corporate byproduct into something culturally genuine was actually the wisest move. Would it have been better to have had a better script, a more distinctive storytelling perspective, all around sharper dialogue for the generally likable cast, and a less execrable use for the great but utterly wasted Susan Sarandon? Maybe that would have made this movie less totally forgettable, and thereby would have served to make a more meaningful impact on cultural representation in this genre. Or, maybe what they did was actually the right choice; regardless of how bland this movie is—and pragmatically speaking it was almost inevitably going to be bland—director Angel Manuel Soto nevertheless managed to smuggle in a true Latinx sensibility into what is really no worse (or better) than any number of post-“Iron Man” derivatives. That counts as progress too, I guess.
