The last act is a slog, full of people learning lessons and feeling their feelings and somehow Elizabeth Perkins grasping elusive metaphysical concepts intuitively—drivel, essentially. But the first two acts are a delight, with Tom Hanks truly possessed by the magical exuberance of a twelve-year old boy. When they filmed the scene where Hanks and Robert Loggia dance on a giant-sized electronic keyboard, I can only imagine that the cast, the extras, the whole crew on set that day must have been speechless with awe, shaken by the electricity of being there for a moment of true cinematic immortality.
