A whimsical, magical realist take on how the afterlife works—and how very polite and orderly it is. Neither the plot nor the script are particularly brilliant (the story is actually pretty corny), but what really shines is the filmmaking invention at work here: set designs of staggering scale; seemingly hundreds of live (not CG!) extras; and luminously creative lighting design that sometimes feels almost contemporary in expressiveness. Worth seeing just for the reminder of the extent of possibility in pre-digital filmmaking.
