More charming than it is good, this proto-“Moonrise Kingdom” features an insanely adorable, young Diane Lane and charming French kid Thelonious Bernard as two tweens who meet by chance, quickly decide that they’re love, and run away to Venice to make one grand romantic gesture before the real world tears them apart. The premise is pretty irresistible, as is the European scenery, but like a car with one flat tire, it’s continually hobbled by Bernard’s erratic performance. It could be that his limited acting ability was exacerbated by his thick accent or perhaps his part was written with oblivious churlishness, but either way, his Romeo character seems to unintentionally suggest that the stereotype of arrogant, petty French men applies to arrogant, petty French boys. Still, Lane is so naturally gifted a performer that she carries the film almost well enough for both of them. Watchable but not moving.
