Not sure how you can pack this much goodness into a movie that runs just ninety-five minutes long. First, what a stacked cast! It’s a genuine pleasure to see Lee J. Cobb, Jack Warden and Martin Balsam chew scenery. Also, every moment is loaded with directorial verve, every shot is purposeful and in perfect sync with not just the story but also with what the characters seem to be thinking, what the audience is interpolating from the character’s words and actions on the screen. It’s also impressively durable; on rewatches, even when the outcome is already known, the intricacy of the deliberations remains magnetically compelling. A true masterpiece.
Watched it with the whole family, and all of the kids were glued to the screen. A good chunk of the way into the first act, when it became apparent to one of my eleven-year old boys that the movie was revolving around Henry Fonda, he turned to me and proudly announced, “I think HE killed him!”
