Thank god for the performances. Gascón has a great presence (and would be a perfect Almodóvar muse); Saldaña fully commits and grounds the film; Gomez is a nice pop of color.
Otherwise...Jacques Audiard's cursory knowledge of Mexico and the trans experience is very apparent as he tries to tackle heavy themes about identity and adapting to a new life but it's all a mess of half-baked ideas barely fleshed out. Pretty much every musical number is tuneless, listless, and poorly staged. Maybe it's a cilantro film.
