Performances by Taylor and Hepburn are what makes this film memorable.
Hepburn playing a villain for the only time in her career?
She plays a villain (Violet) as no one ever has or will again. She must thread the needle delicately seeming practical but delusional at the same time.
Taylor has more room to create a character( Catherine Holly)that’s the most human and sensitive one in the story. I might add ultimately the sanest she’s worn down by events and people but you will see Taylor’s capabilities on display.
Montgomery Clift has the difficult role of being the conscious of the story and must make the moral decision or succumb to pressure. Catherine’s future depends on it .
The central issues of mental health, unnecessary procedures and power of the purse strings are as relevant today as they were when the story was set but at least certain procedures are no longer used.
