We’ve got a new M Night Shyamalan movie upon us, and as usual, it’s a mixed bag. Starting with the bad, this guy needs to find himself a real screenwriter. His dialogue is laughably awkward at times, and between unmotivated character decisions and even some actual plot holes, there’s plenty of script elements that just don’t feel thought out. But if you can find a way past all that, the story itself is actually really captivating. Obviously the premise is intriguing to begin with, but it actually uses its set pieces well and paces itself nicely. All the tension and stakes are there— I just wish he’d spent more time on the script to deliver on its potential. So for a Saturday matinee I had a good time; it’s just a shame it falls apart after you think about it for five seconds.
