I admit, my viewing of The Godfather was long overdue. I waited so long to see this movie because I was honestly scared that I wouldn’t like it. I hate being that guy who misses the hype surrounding classic films, and I thought for sure that would be the case, here. This movie is often regarded as the greatest movie ever made. However, I realize now that maybe people were saying this was good because it is good! I’m so pleased to say that I thought The Godfather was outstanding.
Is is the greatest movie ever made? Probably not. But I absolutely can see why someone would think that; this is a nearly perfect movie. In terms of technicalities, I can’t think of anything that could’ve been done better. The writing, editing, cinematography, score... it’s all excellent. But if you ask me, the acting was far and away the best aspect of this film. It’s impossible to pick one great performance from it; Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall and practically everyone else in it give the best performance of their careers.
The Godfather was certainly a long movie, but it didn’t feel like it at all. It’s paced extremely well. It’s story and characters are also just so immersive. There’s also a lot of slow-moving scenes, but they were never boring, in my opinion. Many times, characters just sit down and talk for a while, and yet I was simply riveted.
I don’t really have any complaints about this film. As I said before, I wouldn’t call this the greatest movie of all time, but it was still pretty damn good! I’m just so happy that I liked this movie. I also can’t wait to see the sequel (or technically, prequel), which I will probably watch sometime this week. Definitely be sure to see The Godfather. I understand that I’m basically the last guy to see this movie, but I’ll “recommend” it anyway. I’d say it lives up to the hype.
