Captain America: Civil War is top-tier MCU. As far as superhero movies go, this is what they should strive to be.
Of course, when we see these films, the main thing we’re looking for is the action. Long story short, this one knows what the audience wants to see. All of the action sequences feel epic in proportion, often because they are emotionally-charged. For example, that airport fight is still one of the MCU’s most entertaining battles to this day.
Now while it does have some killer action, I actually like this movie because it still has a lot more to offer. To a certain extent, this feels like the point in the franchise where things start to actually be about the characters, rather than the set-pieces (which, given, are still cool). I don’t care if this nothing more than a Summer blockbuster to some people; I honestly find it pretty emotional.
This film has so many characters in it that it barely even feels like a standalone movie anymore. I could see how that could be problematic to some people, but I personally think it’s handled quite well. Everyone gets enough screentime, and at the end of the day, it still (mostly) feels like Cap’s movie.
To elaborate more on that, I also love the new characters that are introduced. Black Panther, for one, is one of the coolest characters in this entire movie... scratch that, franchise. As for Spider-Man; the MCU wouldn’t be the same without him. He’s such a likable character.
Even the characters that we’ve seen before are portrayed excellently. It feels like a lot of “progress” is made to their long-term arcs in this one. All of the acting is great, too. Both Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr. particularly shine in this.
Captain America: Civil War is a brilliant chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It nails the action and the drama better than almost any other modern blockbuster.
