Katalas’s review published on Letterboxd:
Don Jose: We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all.
The Wild Bunch follows the story of robbers, who have known only the violence and lifestyle of an outlaw. But with old age and time beyond them, they have no choice but to bid farewell to their golden age of the American West.
All remained with the same mentality in mind, that of staying faithful to the group. And our men are far from being saints: they spend most of their days drinking, screwing girls, shooting and riding, and are certainly the most violent old people in the West.
When violence takes hold, it is present over the long term and leaves no survivors. From the beginning, in what is to be their last robbery, pistols are fired from everywhere, guards, robbers and civilians are wounded or killed. The editing is fast, chaotic and also accompanied by slow-motion, which reinforces the violence.
The second act could be described as calm and allows us to better understand our outlaws, what haunt them and destroy them psychologically. We see it especially during a robbery of a train where, although everything takes place, one feels towards the end that old age does not allow them to continue as such.
And finally the third act that could be compared as the "No Russians" of Call of Duty, if only here we witness a massacre that never seems to end in a villa.
It's a film that is actually long but worth it. There seems to be no point where to get out of nowhere. There are also flashbacks of Pike when he abandons Thornton who apparently was not present in the film for a while, and if that was still the case today I can be sure that without these elements we would not feel such a deep connection between these two characters, and above all we would not understand the very story of this film.
